Local teen singer speaks out with debut single
"Many teens, including myself, have a hard time online differentiating between platonic and romantic feelings. A lot of the time, teenagers feel pressured into relationships."
Local 17-year-old singer and songwriter, Kiesha, is ready to break onto the music scene.
The teenage songstress released her debut single in late May titled “Airplane Mode”. In the single, Kiesha talks about the hardships of relationships and sexuality in the digital age.
She also talks about wanting to be isolated and figuratively places the world on “Airplane Mode”.
“Who needs healthy communication, when you can put the world on Airplane Mode?” said Kiesha.

“Airplane Mode” is also a commentary on her personal experience with relationships.
“Many teens, including myself, have a hard time online differentiating between platonic and romantic feelings. A lot of the time, teenagers feel pressured into relationships,” said Kiesha.
Kiesha describes identifying as bisexual as another conflicting factor in her life.
“After 2020, I realized that I have a preference when it comes to dating. I prefer girls, and despite being attracted to guys, relationships with them are always forced and unnatural.
“However, I still feel pressured into dating guys because my friends and family support my relationships with men more than women. Most of the time, I wish I could switch off everyone and escape somewhere where I don’t feel pressured into liking anyone at all,” said Kiesha.
The Pretoria-based songstress also draws her influences from many genres of music. She also does not want to box herself into a particular genre of music.
The song itself is a pop ballad with R&B influences. It took the musician almost the whole of last year to write the song, but she still describes it as being her best creation yet.
“It is the best thing I’ve ever created. As an artist, I’m constantly creating little pieces of what I consider ‘gold’ and this particular piece represented me as an artist. In my opinion, there is no better song to release as my debut because it represents me as a person and the energy I’d like to contribute to the world,” she said.
