Learners attend fun leadership skills camp
"The camp was amazing and fun. The four days felt very short and I wish it was longer."
Thirty-one learners from seven Rotary Clubs in Gauteng (Waterkloof, Ermelo, Benoni, Morningside, Mamelodi, Pretoria and Randburg) recently attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Rotary youth camp at Magoebaskloof.
The four-day camp was organised by the Rotary clubs and was held at the Warriors Academy Base Camp in Magoebaskloof, Limpopo where learners were joined by learners from Tzaneen and Mokopane from August 19 to 22.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (Ryla) officer from Waterkloof club Mmatepeng “Muda” Temane said the learners were identified by local schools and most were sponsored by their local Rotary clubs.
Temane said the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is an intensive leadership experience organised by Rotary clubs and districts, both locally and internationally.
Ryla takes place twice a year in April and August in a form of a base camp where young people aged 13-19 are given a chance to develop leadership skills and the opportunity to network, according to Temane.
“Community development like this is critical.”
The programme puts much emphasis on personal development, emotional intelligence, citizenship and environmental awareness.
“Ryla stimulates the youth to ignite their full potential through a variety of activities, both indoors and outdoors,” said Temane.
“It is a perfect enabler and opportunity for Rotary clubs to work with communities and schools in identifying potential leaders, introducing them to this vibrant organisation.

Grade 9 learner, Koketso Maubane (16) from Mamelodi said, “I feel that the camp has changed me, I don’t fear anything anymore – if I can walk on burning coals, what else shall I be afraid of?
“The camp was amazing and fun. The four days felt very short and I wish it was longer,” said grade 9 learner, Koketso Kanyane (15) from Danville.
“This investment Rotary put into our lives will not go to waste.”
The learners have been equipped with unique skills and are now ready to serve their schools and communities, with the support of their Rotary clubs and Rotary community corps.
Rotary is an international organisation that has been in existence for over 116 years globally and 100 in Africa.
The Waterkloof Rotary club has already started with the next Ryla for next year April.
