Central police clamp down on contraband

“Doing random searches is also typical in order to keep the level of contraband down.”

Pretoria Central police conducted searches of holding cells on Thursday morning, to ensure safety to both inmates and police officers on duty.

Central police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the cell searches were also a bid to prevent any escape or death of inmates and staff in custody.

“This is to effectively control the amount of contraband coming into the cells, such as drugs, weapons and cellphones.

“We confiscate these items if found to be in the cells or in possession of the suspect and this may lead to additional charges of possession for the suspect.”

Selepe said the police were pleased that during their cell search, nothing was found.

“Doing random searches is also typical in order to keep the level of contraband down.”
