Security officer chases down Centurion hit-and-run driver

Reaction officer Michael Valoyi chased down a driver that allegedly knocked down a pedestrian and tried to take off.

In times of trauma having a good Samaritan at one’s side is always great.

Fidelity ADT Reaction Officer Michael Valoyi, was that good Samaritan when he assisted a woman who was knocked down by a vehicle in Zwartkop.

On September 2, Officer Valoyi was on a routine patrol on Lenchen Road at approximately 17:00 when he saw the driver of a white Mercedes Benz driving far too fast in the yellow lane.

Concerned, the officer kept an eye on the driver only to see as he approached the intersection of Melkbos Street and Lenchen, that he knocked over a female pedestrian who was walking in the yellow lane.

The driver of the Mercedes failed to stop and sped off.

In a statement the security company said Valoyi followed the vehicle and reported the incident on the community radio requesting assistance and back-up.

“He finally managed to stop the vehicle and instructed the driver to return to the scene of the accident,” the statement read.

“The lady fortunately only sustained minor injuries on her right leg and hand.”

An ambulance was called to the scene and transported the victim to a hospital for treatment.

The driver was handed over to police.

Fidelity ADT branch Manager Maurice Malan, commended Valoyi on his brave actions.

“In our line of work we often hear of incidents where pedestrians or cyclists have been hurt by the driver of a car who has not stopped to check on the person,” he said.

“We are just grateful our officer was on the scene to assist and apprehend the driver in question.”
