Teenage rage ends in murder

Makgatho said the only justice to the family would be for the accused to spend time in prison.

The family of Koketso Sakoneka (17), who was allegedly stabbed to death by another 17-year-old boy during a fight, said the only justice the family wants is for the accused to spend time in prison.

Constable Sibongile Vuma said it was alleged that the teenagers had a fight but it was still not clear what the fight was about.

Vuma said the suspect ran after realising the victim was bleeding, not being aware that the victim was already dead.

“Police were on the scene on Monday. Community members did not comment about what happened and who stabbed the victim. Only on Tuesday we were called by community members who told us they knew what happened.

“They told us they knew who did this. The minor was taken into police custody.”

Koketso’s mother Mapula Sakoneka said the death of her child has not been easy for her and his young brother.

“My child was killed like a dog. I do not think I will ever accept how he died. His death has been really hard especially to his younger brother because he saw what happened.”

On Thursday Mapula said Koketso’s little brother had not spoken to anyone, slept, eaten or drank anything since the death of his older brother.

“He is traumatised. I want him to get counselling because I am afraid he might do something that might land him in prison.”

Mapula said the suspect and Koketso used to be friends at some point.

She said the family of the suspect has not shown sympathy with them since the incident.

“His uncle hid him after the incident. On Tuesday community members went to his house and threatened to burn the house if he was not let out. He later called the police to come and take him. We have not heard anything from them since the incident.”

Koketso’s grandmother Johan Makgatho said she was still in pain about how her grandchild was killed.

“My grandchild was killed like someone killing a chicken. This is hurting me so much because I have never seen someone being murdered this way.

“His mother raised them in very difficult circumstances as they do not have a father. She was selling veggies to make sure he goes to school so one day he can become successful and help the family.

“His brother has not spoken to anyone since the incident. Koketso died in his arms and he is very young to have experienced something like that.”

Makgatho said the only justice to the family would be for the accused to spend time in prison.

“We do not want to see him outside. We do not know how Koketso’s brother would react if his let out. It would be better if he was just locked up.”

Koketso will be laid to rest next week Saturday in Limpopo.
