Car wash helps with job creation
‘Lack of jobs in the community inspired us to take a stand and do something about our lives as the youth of Mamelodi.’
Lack of employment opportunities has forced five friends who grew up together to start a car wash in Mamelodi.
With proceeds from Back2Back car wash they not only put food on the table, but also benefit drug addicts who are willing to change their lives for the better by assisting at the facility.
One of the members Johannes Tshigana (26) said the car wash, at the corner of Nsikiti and Ribungwana streets in Mamelodi, was started two months ago, and has made a change in their lives.
He said they have decided to start a car wash after failing to secure jobs.
“Lack of jobs inspired us to take a stand and do something about our lives as the youth of Mamelodi. We didn’t want to end up in the streets doing bad things.” said Tshigana.
“The car wash keeps us busy and even though business is still slow, we are getting there,” said Tshigana.
Reabetswe Gwala (26) said the car wash has kept them together. “The little that we get here is able to feed us with with what we need in life,” he said, adding that a group youths who were drug addicts often came around to the car wash to lend a helping hand.
“Most of the drug users we work with are slowly quitting and changing their habits,” said Gwala.
“We have a drug addict who has started a business selling bottled water to local taxi drivers to quench their thirst when driving under the scorching sun.
“Most of our customers are small business taxi drivers and community members in Mamelodi East, extension 4.”
