Floating trophies for the most well-maintained sidewalk of the month

"I am flattered and proud to say that the floating trophy boasts in front of my sidewalk."

The race is on as the end of the year is near, and Capital Park residents only have a few more months to walk away as the ultimate well-maintained sidewalk of the year competition winner.

In the past, there was only one winner of the month, but the organisers thought it best to announce two floating trophies a month because the demand for the competition was so great.

The overall winner of the year will be announced in December.

This month’s floating trophies found their place in front of the houses of Ina van Niekerk in Trouw Street and Martin Ludik in Van Heerden Street, respectively.

Van Niekerk said it was a great honour and privilege to receive the trophy.

“However, I must mention that the beautiful garden is all the hard work of my gardener, Piet Nhlato.

“He has green fingers. If he plants an alley in the ground, it grows, but if I do it, it dies,” joked Van Niekerk.

She has lived in Trouw Street for 28 years and mentioned that she likes to keep her sidewalk clean and tidy.

“Piet and I both love flowers. If our garden radiates a good image, our sidewalk should look good too.

“It creates a good impression for the rest of the residents in the area.

“I am flattered and proud to say the floating trophy boasts in front of my sidewalk,” she said.

Van Niekerk added that every now and then she has to pinch herself over the trophy that stands in front of her yard.

“I was stunned when Donne-li stopped in front of my yard.

“I thought it well to give the trophy to Piet. He went home with it that afternoon and still cannot stop speaking about how proud his family is about this trophy,” she said.

Ludik said that if one’s place is neat, it is good for the heart and the soul.

“We have lived in this house for 31 years.

“I have heard about the competition and seen the trophy here and there, but I never thought it would be in front of my house.

“It was really a stroke of luck,” he said.

Ludik mentioned that he likes gardening, especially over weekends.

“It would be great if every person could be proud of what was going on outside their yard.

“It is a wonderful environment to live in.

“We want to encourage our fellow residents to make an effort with their gardens. Who knows? Maybe the next floating trophy is in front of their yard,” he said.
