Crime prevention and awareness tips from Mams cops

“We continue to call upon the community to be vigilant and provide information about potential criminality to the police, and also to report crimes diligently.”

The police, together with the local CPF, Moses Mabhida Foundation and GBV brigade, held a crime prevention and awareness campaign to sensitise the community of Marikana informal settlement in Nellmapius and Mamelodi East.

Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said the awareness campaign started with a door-to-door campaign where they addressed families and shop owners about different crimes.

The families were also informed about the issue of gender-based violence and domestic violence.

“Shop owners were sensitised about business robberies and how to prevent these crimes,” said Mashiloane.

However, due to several car hijackings reported over the weekend in Mamelodi, motorists could not be left out.

“Police proceeded to the busy intersection at Serapeng Street in Mamelodi East to talk to motorists about hijacking hotspots. Crime prevention tips pamphlets were given out to prevent hijackings,” said Mashiloane.

Motorists were encouraged to avoid travelling alone at night, not to stop at hijacking hotspots or any secluded area.

They were warned not to pick up hitchhikers and to always be alert when driving.

“If you suspect that you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the police.

“The campaign was intended to show our continued commitment to rooting out crime and foster closer working relationships with the community, to create a safe and secure environment for all,” police said in a statement.

“We continue to call upon the community to be vigilant and provide information about potential criminality to the police, and also to report crimes diligently.”
