Hijacked e-hailing vehicle recovered in Faerie Glen

The driver was approached by two armed men right after he had dropped someone off.

Private security recovered a hijacked e-hailing vehicle in Lynnwood Glen last week.

According to Fidelity ADT community development manager Bennie Coetzee, security officers responded to an emergency call from the guards at Glenwood estate.

Upon arrival, they discovered that a vehicle was just hijacked in front of the property and that the victim, an e-hailing driver, was still on-site.

Coetzee said the driver was approached by two armed suspects right after he had dropped someone off.

They took his vehicle, a light blue Toyota Corolla, and fled.

“Fortunately because this incident was reported and flagged, another Fidelity ADT officer responding to an alarm at Florida Keys in Faerie Glen, spotted a suspicious light blue Corolla with no number plates in front of a complex,” he said.

“Fidelity Reaction officers inspected the abandoned vehicle and found that the vehicle’s licence disc matched the hijacked Toyota’s registration.

“Tracker SA was contacted and the vehicle was handed over to Garsfontein SAPS.”

The suspect was arrested.

Coetzee warned this was not an uncommon incident.

He advised residents to:

– Be extra alert. Switch off the car radio, do not be distracted by your cellphone and keep a lookout on your surroundings. If you have noticed any suspicious-looking individuals, do not get out of your car.

– Phone ahead to let friends or family know that you will be arriving soon for them to be ready to let you onto the property.

– Be aware of vehicles parked in the street with the occupants inside. It might be criminals watching the area.

– Make sure that your doors are locked and your windows closed. Don’t have bags or cellphones visible. Make sure valuables are in your boot.

– When leaving a restaurant or shopping centre, be on the lookout for anyone that could be following you.

– If you believe you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or security provider guardhouse if there is any doubt.

– Try to keep as calm as possible and stay focused on getting to a safe place.
