“The fire started at the deep fryer and was subsequently put out by staff. Two employees suffered burns on their hands, face and back,” Ramjee said.
“The lady, who was using the fryer at the time, bravely first drained the oil before exiting the kitchen. This action prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the property but resulted in her hand, back and face being burnt.
“An attendant, rushed in to extinguish the fire and also received superficial burns on his hand and face.”
He said he treated the injured staff members before they were transported to a local medical facility for further care.
Laudium disaster management, PAJ community patrollers, SAPS, fire department, GPG and Netcare 911 were all on the scene.
Ramjee emphasised the importance of first aid, fire training and the value of a fully stocked first aid kit and regularly serviced fire extinguishers.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the two staff members who suffered burn wounds had recovered. The owner of the garage could not comment.
