Police, residents to remove bushes harbouring criminals in Garsfontein
The Garsfontein police have called on residents to assist them in cutting the long grass that harbours criminals in the area.
The Garsfontein police called on members of the community to help them clear out dense bushes that serve as hideouts for criminals in the area.
Numerous burglaries and theft out of backyards have been taking place at properties adjacent to the spruit in the area of Jacqueline Drive, according to the station’s spokesperson, Duane Lightfoot.
“The police believe that these overgrown bushes are contributing towards crime in the area as criminals find shelter in them out of sight,” he said.
“In some of these cases, the police and even residents have chased after criminals.
“CCTV footage from some of the targeted houses was also made available where it can be clearly seen how criminals either emerged from or disappeared in the bushes.”
Lightfoot said some of these cases were still being investigated by the police.
Sector managers of Garsfontein police station and community members joined forces on Saturday to clear out some of the bushes along the said spruit.
“Although much progress has been made, a lot of bushes still need to be cut,” Lightfoot said.
“Therefore, the sector managers are again inviting community members to join them on October 9 to continue clearing out overgrowth in sector 3.
“Bring along yourself and a positive attitude. More chainsaws and brush cutters are also needed.
“Don’t forget to bring liquids for hydration.”

Lightfoot said this project of the sector managers would continue until the spruit is cleared out to a satisfactory level, providing the participation and assistance of the residents and other role players.
