September hero passionate about community
"The problems affecting the lives and livelihoods of people, the problems affecting property value and financial wellbeing of people, the challenges affecting quality of life and security of residents in Tshwane is my focus."
This month’s Centurion Hero is Alderman Peter Sutton (44) DA councillor of ward 78 and chairperson of Tshwane’s financial oversight committee section 79.

He continued his studies after school through the University of South Africa (Unisa) in the field of accounting and worked as an article clerk at an audit firm in Illovo, Sandton.
“During this time, I gained valuable experience in different sectors of industry, including trade unions.”

“In 2010, as part of the work I did in the correctional services in Cape Town, politics found me. In October 2010 I was elected as the branch chairperson for the DA branch in ward 78 under Councillor Marietha Aucamp.
“My journey into full-time politics started there and in May 2011. After the municipal elections I joined the DA as a proportional councillor. I was elected as a ward councillor in September 2011 after a position went vacant due to the sudden resignation of the then ward councillor.”
He said being a local resident allowed him to be very active in the community.
“Apart from being the ward councillor, I am a member of various community organisations and I am also the current chairperson of the section 79 Group Finance Oversight Committee in the Tshwane metro. I work closely with the Speaker of Council.”
Peter was conferred as an Alderman in this month and served in various positions in the DA over his political career.
“I am a committed DA activist and specifically for the vision of value driven politics. I will always oppose any form of race-based politics. What unites people is so much more than what divides us and that is where my principles are aligned.”
He said the problems affecting the lives and livelihoods of people, the problems affecting property value and financial well-being of people, the challenges affecting quality of life and security of residents in Tshwane is his focus.
Besides politics Peter is active in CrossFit athlete and is a member of BioFit CrossFit in Hennopspark. He is adamant CrossFit saved his life.
“When opportunity allows, I enjoy fly fishing in the mountain areas in our country as well as deep-sea fishing.
“And I am very proud of my stamp collection and enjoy spending time on this hobby.”
He is well travelled with visits to 16 countries and a road trip in 2008 which took him through six provinces in SA. He is father to Emily-Rose (4 months) and husband to Sindi.
In 2017 Peter was also chosen as one of the Centurion Person of the Year.
