Pedestrian bridge finally safe to use
“Since the safety rails were erected, we no longer have complaints of safety and no more robberies reported at the bridge.”
The much-awaited safety rails on the pedestrian bridge crossing between Tsakane and Khalambazo in Mamelodi East are finally installed.
The bridge that gave people a fright of their lives when crossing the bridge, including small children going to school, is now safe for everyone to cross.
“Residents had been complaining about the issue of safety on the bridge for years before I was elected as ward councillor in 2016,” said councillor Jack Mukhari.
He said the Tshwane metro finally approved the budget and the rails were finally installed around July.
“The bridge was used by a lot of people in the mornings and the evenings and it was also a hotspot for criminals,” said Mukhari.

Previously when it rained, “we had to make sure that no one was crossing the river since it was dangerous to cross”.
“Since the safety rails were installed, we no longer have complaints of safety and no more robberies reported at the bridge.
“Criminals used to hide next to the bridge and wait for unsuspecting people to cross the bridge and rob them of their belongings,” said Mukhari.
Elderly people, especially those who are partially blind, can cross the bridge without being scared of falling off the bridge, he added.
Mukhari concluded by encouraging the two communities to look after the bridge, especially the rails and safeguard them against criminals vandalising metro property.
