Tobacco valued at R3m recovered in hijacked truck

One suspect was arrested by the Tshwane SAPS flying squad earlier this week.

Tobacco valued at an estimated R3m was recovered in a hijacked truck in the Pretoria North vicinity by the Tshwane SAPS flying squad last week.

Both of the trailers attached to the truck were reportedly filled with tobacco.

Previously, Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli warned truck owners and drivers to be cautious of scammers who rented their vehicles for nefarious reasons.

“People are still hiring trucks under false presences to steal them,” Mdluli said.

At the time, Mdluli said the modus operandi used by the scammers entailed renting trucks out, then hijacking them when they were delivered.
