Memorial service for Klofie teacher who lost six-month Covid-19 battle

"The death of a loved one is never easy. We are broken and have to face life."

A memorial service was held on Monday, October 18, for Hoërskool Waterkloof teacher and sports coach, Japie Claassens (46), who died last week after a six-month battle with Covid-19.

The service was led by pastor Sebastiaan van Dyk from the Lux Mundi Gemeente in Garsfontein.

The devastating news of his death at Milpark hospital, where he was hospitalised for 176 days, was announced on the school’s Facebook page on October 11.

“The death of a loved one is never easy. We are broken and have to face life,” said Van Dyk.

“His death is a huge loss as a husband, father, brother, friend, colleague and coach.

“It pleased the Lord of Heaven and Earth to take him away from us, our beloved Japie at the age of 46.

“In the days to come, we will miss and long for him. But there is quiet resignation in our hearts because we know he went home to our Heavenly Father. We are grateful for all the tender and sweet memories we have of and with him.

“His place on earth is empty, his voice is silent.”

Van Dyk added that Claassens was adventurous and his family was his everything.

“Although your time on earth has come to an end, we will see you again.”

Director of specialised sport at the Kloof and also a friend of Claassens, Muller van der Nest, said that they received messages of hope from colleagues, parents of the school as well as learners.

“We want to especially thank the doctors and nursing staff from Milpark hospital who cared for him for so long.

“Also to those who have supported the family, his wife Lindie and their two daughters, Nadia and Anja during these difficult times.

“I have fond memories of Japie that I will cherish forever. Until we meet again, rest in peace.”

“Dear dad. I don’t know where to start. I hope you know what you mean to me. My greatest regret is that your grandchildren will never be able to play along with their grandfather. You would have been a great grandfather. You can now rest in peace, I will take good care of mom and Anja.” – Nadia

“I miss your hugs and kisses. I miss your arms wrapped around me and the sound of your drilling machine when I tried to do my homework. I miss your voice that echoed on the school porches.” – Anja

A memorial service for the learners and teachers will be held at the school on Wednesday, October 20.
