Man sleeping under Gautrain bridge arrested for unlicenced firearm

“He explained to the officers that he was left behind by his friends from Soweto, but he was not clear about where they were coming from or where they were going.”

Tshwane metro police have arrested a man found sleeping under the Gautrain bridge in Garsfontein area.

He was in possession of an unlicenced firearm.

The suspect was found under the N14 highway/Eeufees Road bridge on Monday.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said members of the task team were doing their daily patrols, when they spotted the man under a bridge.

“They approached the man, woke him up and searched him.”

Mahamba said upon investigating, the man was found in possession of an unlicenced firearm with three rounds.

“He explained to the officers that he was left behind by his friends from Soweto, but he was not clear about where they were coming from or where they were going.

“He was arrested for possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition. An investigation will be done to check if the firearm could be linked to crimes and the whereabouts of the people he said he was with,” said Mahamba.

The arrest follows the TMPD drug unit, on Saturday arresting 30-year-old man for dealing in and being in the possession of drugs in Hammanskraal.

“The TMPD members got a tip-off from the public about a white VW Polo doing deliveries in that area. The vehicle was traced and the suspect was found with Nyaope and crystal meth with an estimated street value of R100 000 hidden inside the vehicle,” said Mahamba.

“Well done to the TMPD team that is dedicated to serve Tshwane communities with pride and will continue to combat crime within the city.”

He said members of the public were encouraged to report any crime to the nearest SAPS station or to the TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096.
