Traffic congestion soon to be something of the past

“It will relieve a lot of traffic congestion at Estcourt Avenue and Theuns van Niekerk Street as well as assist residents from The Reeds.”

Progress was made with the long-awaited extension of Lenchen Road in Centurion and estimates are that it should be completed in about a month.

The said road will connect the R101 Old Johannesburg Road at the Lenchen crossing in Eldoraigne with Rooihuiskraal Road in the Amberfield area.

Cindy Billson, DA-councillor of ward 69, said the extension or slipstream onto the Old Johannesburg Road at the Lenchen crossing was complete and Lenchen Road is currently being refurbished.

“It will relieve a lot of traffic congestion at Estcourt Avenue and Theuns van Niekerk Street as well as assist residents from The Reeds.”

Billson said the entire project should be completed by November next year.

“The developer can, however, proceed with the extension of Lenchen Road from where it currently ends, to Rooihuiskraal Road. There had been a hold-up due to servitudes, which had now been solved.”

Tshwane economic development and planning MMC Bruce Lee said “two servitudes still needs to be signed off by the city manager, which would make it easier for the developer to proceed.”

“One was a registration that was a deregistration which just needed to have been cleared. The other is a servitude of 300m behind Wierda Glen Estate, which will be cancelled.

“The mayor met with the developer on-site on Thursday and clearing of the servitudes was approved by the metro. I am in the process of escalating the matter to the city manager.”

The planning of the project started in 2016 after Billson received numerous complaints from residents about traffic congestion in the area.

She said the construction of the road is a private initiative of around R50-million and the report for the construction of the road was approved by the metro in December last year.

Rekord reported earlier the developer, Power of Co, finances the project at its own cost. Upon completion thereof, it will become the property of the metro as indicated by Francois Mouton, director of Power of Co.

Mouton said it would be a gift from the developer to the city.

Billson said the plan for the construction of the road was incorporated into the metro’s roads network plan for the area.

“There were major direct benefits from the redistribution of traffic, currently carried especially from Olievenhoutbosch on Theuns van Niekerk Street and Estcourt Avenue,” she said.

“Furthermore, this initiative is congruent with the planned provincial government rehabilitation programme for the N14 freeway.”

Billson said the building of a wall along the road has also commenced.

“It is to soundproof and secure the residents. Security is always a priority,” Billson concluded.
