Businesses encouraged to set-up workplace vaccination sites

“As the number of infections drop, we cannot afford to become complacent.”

Tshwane metro has called on businesses with a cohort of 50 or more employees to partner with them and the provincial health department to set-up pop-up vaccination sites at the workplace.

The sites would vaccinate employees and other interested members of the public.

“This call forms part of our efforts to drive up vaccinations in Tshwane and Gauteng to avoid a possibly vicious fourth Covid-19 wave,” Tshwane MMC for health Sakkie du Plooy said.

He said the metro previously had successful collaborations with private companies to vaccinate their employees.

“Last month, the city teamed up with South African Breweries to set set-up a vaccination site in Rosslyn,” Du Plooy said.

During the two-day initiative, a total of 1 069 vaccines were said to have been administered.

“As the number of infections drop, we cannot afford to become complacent,” he said.

“Instead, Du Plooy said, “Residents have to actively work towards creating herd immunity not only in Tshwane, but the country as a whole.

“This will only be achieved when most people are fully vaccinated.

“Currently, more than a quarter of residents are vaccinated.”

According to him, to reach herd immunity, 2,5 million residents would have to be fully vaccinated.

“More people are being allowed at churches, entertainment events and other gatherings. Life is slowly returning to normal with positive outcomes in our personal and business environments,” Du Plooy said, urging residents to continue to adhere to the well-known safety protocols and for residents to get vaccinated.

“The city stands ready to support and work with private companies to drive up vaccinations.

“Interested companies can send an email to popupsite@gauteng.gov.za or call the hotline on 0800 22 88 27,” Du Plooy said.
