Mamelodi police concerned by rise in assault cases

Twenty-four assault cases were reported at the Mamelodi East police station in less than a week.

At least 16 cases of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm were reported in less than a week at the Mamelodi East police station.

This was in addition to eight common assault cases reported over the same period (15-20 October), according to police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.

He said this was an “alarming rate” of cases.

Out of the 24 cases reported, 17 suspects have since been arrested.

“We are concerned about the level of violence in the community,” said Mashilaone.

The most common assault cases reported at the station were domestic violence incidents.

“Most assaults happen over weekends at places where they sell alcohol.”

The police called on community members, young and old, to consider the consequences of assaulting someone.

They also warned of possible jail time.

“Please think twice before fighting each other. It is better to rather settle your differences peacefully or get help from the police or social workers,” he said, adding that people should control their anger and avoid a possible criminal record.

Mashilaone said the police could be contacted on 08600 10111.
