Singer Theuns Jordaan loses battle against cancer

Afrikaans singer and songwriter, Theuns Jordaan (50), died on Wednesday from cancer after he was diagnosed with leukaemia last year.

Since then, he received chemotherapy and had a bone marrow transplant in March.

The beloved singer, with his raspy voice, stole hearts with his version of “Beautiful in Beaufort-Wes”.

Jordaan released his debut album Vreemde Stad in 2001. He was one of the most successful Afrikaans music artists with more than a million albums sold.

The news of his death sent shockwaves through the country. Jannie du Toit, who also enchanted audiences for the past 50 years with his voice, shared his condolences.

South African musician, actor, writer and foodie, Lochner de Kok said the news of Jordaanְ’s death left him devastated.

“I heard Theuns playing the guitar at Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees one year and knew then this man will make a huge contribution to the music industry.

“With the release of his first album, he thanked the legends in the industry who look after the younger musicians.

“I will miss him terribly. He was an honest and sincere human being. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Innibos marketing and media manager Sandra Jacobs said that Jordaan was one of the great highlights on stage.

“As an artist, but also as a human being, he will be missed.”

The actor and musician, Bouwer Bosch said Jordaan was the most mild-tempered human being and he was a “gentleman”.

“Theuns was a phenomenal singer and songwriter. He had everyone’s best interests at heart.”

Musician Pieter Koen said that a big tree has fallen in the Afrikaans music industry.

“Theuns did not have any grey areas. I contacted him for advice and we enjoyed coffee together regularly.

“He will be missed, especially for the work he has done for Afrikaans, but also as a friend.”
