Cops plan to curb spike-trap incidents
“There will still be a NatJoints meeting where we will discuss how we will go about these operations."

Police in the Akasia policing precinct said they have a plan to fight so-called “spike-trap” robberies on the N4 highway.
According to police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli, officers would be stationed in the highway’s vicinity.
She said the plan came about after two recent spike-trap incidents along the N4 to Rustenburg.
The station learnt of the most recent incident when a motorist called them, asking for a vehicle to be dispatched as they had been “spiked”.
“We dispatched a vehicle and upon arrival at the scene, the police vehicle also hit something which was thought to be a spike trap,” she said.
Mdluli said there had been some unofficial reports of other spike incidents within the precinct.
“There will still be a NatJoints meeting where we will discuss how we will go about these operations,” she said.
Motorists were also advised to drive with their lights on bright when they were travelling on the N4 due to the road being poorly lit.
“It’s very dark on the highway at night and you cannot see… You might even bump into an animal while it’s crossing. We advise motorists to turn on their brights, but adjust to normal lighting when another car comes,” Mdluli said.
“That road is not safe and we are aware of it; hence, we are working on it.”
Last month, a video showed a woman running into traffic along the N1 South, between the Sefako Makgatho Drive and Stormvoël Road tollgates, after her tyre burst in an alleged spike-trap incident.
The robber was then seen running away from her vehicle, which was parked in the yellow lane, and into nearby bushes, as she looked on.
The video went viral shortly and police warned motorists to be extra careful after three armed men attacked a family after they stopped on the side of the road in a separate incident.
