Man (42) shot and killed in Atteridgeville, police to investigate
"It is alleged that three men, all armed, unknown to the deceased, came into the yard where the deceased was together with his friend and opened fire, killing the deceased on the spot."
Atteridgeville police are investigating a case of murder after a 42-year-old man was shot several times by armed men in Maabane Street on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Mapula Rikhotso said it is alleged that three men, all armed and unknown to the deceased, came into the yard where the man was with his friend and opened fire, killing the man on the spot.
Rikhotso said it was not clear what the motive is yet, but the police have hit the ground running investigating a case of murder.
“The community of Atteridgeville is encouraged to come forward with any information that will lead to a prompt arrest of the suspects.”
Atteridgeville police station commander Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu condemned the accessibility of illegal firearms in Atteridgeville as he reels from the continuous loss of family members to these firearms.
“The alarming frequency of shootings in Atteridgeville seek to shake the partnership between the Atteridgeville police and the community into action by activating different Community Policing Forums such as neighborhood watches, community patrolling and many more that will assist the police in reducing the number of illegal firearms on the streets.
“A task team with different capacities has been appointed to speedily investigate this case of murder.”
Last week civil rights movement, Rekgonne Warriors and community members disrupted the services at Atteridgeville police station and Atteridgeville magistrate’s court demanding better services.
Rekgonne Warriors founder Mashadi Mogolegwa said they have been to the police station and the court countless times before demanding that they deal with the issues of gender-based violence and other crimes in the area but nothing has been done.
Mogolegwa said the community has seen a rise in the number of men shooting each other every day.
She said Atteridgeville has become the capital of murder and they do not believe the police are addressing the issue.
