Meet east female DJ on the deck

"I’ve always been up for a challenge, and the fact that the industry is very male-dominated pushed me to work harder."

Pretoria east musician Erin Fischer says she’s always been determined to make a success in becoming a DJ in a male-dominated industry.

Fischer, who goes by her stage name “Errie F” is not only a DJ but a vocalist.

“I originally grew up in KZN but moved to Pretoria with my parents when I was younger. I’ve always had a huge passion for music; I studied music in school and worked in the studio and sang in a few bands over the years.

“I got into the industry a few years back when I dated a DJ for a while, attending all his gigs inspired me to learn and from there I just continued teaching myself new skills,” she said.

The 31-year-old said she knew it would be tough for her to break into the industry but was up for the challenge

“I’ve always been up for a challenge and the fact that the industry is very male-dominated pushed me to work harder,” she said.

Over the past few years, she has established herself as one of the top DJs in the east of Pretoria.

“Music is life! It’s gotten me through some of the hardest times in my life and continues to inspire me on a daily basis. I have huge respect and understanding for every genre because I feel that each is special in its own way, but Deep House is what speaks to me the most. The groove, and the emotions it brings out, is really something beautiful.”

As for memorable events or favourite venues to play, Fischer highlighted her first festival appearance.

“I wouldn’t say there are any specific venues that are my favourite because each event and performance is different. The people are what makes it special, and each night is a different experience for both the artist and audience.

“I did recently play at my first festival gig, Feel Festival, and I have to say, that was such an incredible experience because the planners really went out of their way to make it a unique and special experience for each person,” she said.

Like many artists, Fischer was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which pushed her to start her own media and events company.

“Covid really was a knock to the industry and so many artists struggled tremendously. Once we went into lockdown I started my streaming platform and did studio sessions with guest artists to help keep the music alive. I had amazing support and this is where Fowl Play grew and came to light,” she said.

The aim of Fowl Play was to give new artists and DJs in the industry a platform to showcase and share their talent. “We have so many amazing artists who just need the opportunity to show people what they’re capable of and I feel a lot of venues/promoters aren’t necessarily open to taking a chance on the new guy/girl. For the South African industry to grow, we need to encourage new and fresh artists and give them the platforms to share their talent,” she said.

In her years performing as a DJ, she has opened for and played alongside many reputable artists, such as Lady Lea, Master Simz, Cornelius, Kyle Cassim and Pascal and Pearce to name a few.

“I have a huge respect for international artists such as Walker and Royce, Rampa, Stimming and Xinobi. And locally, I’m inspired by Weston and Engine, Cornelius and definitely the new blood in the industry such as Late Bloomer, Dan Schultz and Puppet Master, I have the privilege of working with these guys on a daily basis and they continue to amaze and inspire me with their passion for what we do,” Fischer said

She encouraged the young artists to stand by their values.

“Keep pushing; there are going to be people who will try to keep you down and hinder your growth, don’t allow it because those that push through against all odds are the ones who come out on top. Always work hard, be strong, stand by your values, and involve yourself with good people in the industry, and you will succeed.”
