Far East ward councillors reflect on the year
The nightmares of Waparand and Mooikloof substations are scarred in everyone’s minds, the absolute tragedy to the way of life for residents of the ward were the worst highlights of this year.

The year 2021 held many challenges for Pretoria east residents such as loadshedding, failing infrastructure and two substations that burnt down.
This was in addition to Covid-19, which spared us no grief either with the country recording 90 172 fatalities to date.
While Tshwane continues to face some challenges, ward councillors share their highlights of the year as well as plans for the next year.

Jacqui Uys (ward 85)
“To me, this time of year got a special sparkle after becoming a mum. I will be spending my Christmas at home with my husband, two kiddos and close family, creating memories and solidifying traditions.
“My wish for every resident in ward 85 is that in this time they find their roots and pay it forward for future generations.
“As a ward, this past year forced us to stand together as neighbours. I am honoured to have been re-elected as a political leader – a great responsibility that I do not take lightly.
“In 2022, we are looking forward to rebuilding the Wapadrand substation. Until then, we need to navigate the complexities of a temporary substation, but we can look forward to no loadshedding.
“I hope residents have a special New Year’s Eve, laughing into 2022. Stay safe.”

Malcolm de Klerk (ward 101)
“Residents can rest assured that I won’t be letting my guard down during the festive period and ensuring, as usual, quick turnaround for any service delivery-related matters that may arise.
“The nightmares of Waparand and Mooikloof substations are scarred into everyone’s minds; this absolute tragedy to the way of life for ward residents was the lowlight of the year.
“However, the community spirit and sheer determination to help their fellow community members were the highlights for me.
“I wish to all who celebrate Christmas and the tradition of families coming together to have a blessed time and that it be joyful.
“We have all had an incredibly tough year. Now through the celebration of friends and family, we may find peace and the true meaning of Christmas.
“The lovely folks at Kungwini welfare organisation will be getting Christmas presents and hot meals for their Christmas day for the residents of the home, thanks to amazing donors.
“Valued residents of ward 101, please have safe journeys to your destinations wherever they may be. Return safely to our ward that we call home.”
