Some Centurion residents face greeting the New Year in darkness

“At around 01:00 on Friday, we received a barrage of frantic calls from customers complaining about not having power.”

Residents in various Centurion areas, might have to cross over to the New Year in darkness, as a sub-protection at a substation was badly compromised, causing a power outage in Wierdapark and Eldoraigne.

Tshwane metro spokesperson, Selby Bokaba said that in the early hours of Friday morning, the metro was alerted to a power outage affecting Wierdapark and Eldoraigne in Centurion.

Bokaba said the metro suspected cable theft and vandalism at a substation to be the cause of the power outage.

“Around 01:00 on Friday, we received a barrage of frantic calls from customers complaining about not having power.”

He said the team responded and upon investigation, they found that at Wierdapark 2 substation on Springbok Street, 10 panels had been stripped off the communication and earth cables.

“The sub-protection was badly compromised.

“The substation will be tested while region 4 technicians are busy with the repairs of the cables.”

Bokaba said Wierdapark and some parts of Eldoraigne remained off.

He could not offer an estimated switch-on time.

He said the Tshwane metro requested for residents to alert them as and when they spotted any suspicious activity around substations.

“Vandalism of our infrastructure and theft of cables cost the municipality millions of rand and lead to service interruption of electricity and water.”

Bokaba said such suspicious activities could be reported to the Tshwane Metro Police Department on 012 358 7095/96.
