Police DNA analysis helps identify body found in Roodeplaat Dam

His body was found after police divers responded to reports by a group of fishermen who heard what sounded like an object being thrown into the water.

On Thursday, DNA analysis by the police’s victim identification centre (VIC) identified a frozen mutilated body dumped at the Riverside Estate, Roodeplaat Dam on December 28 as Zeyn Khan.

Khan (43) was reported missing at the Florida police station on November 29 last year.

His body was found after police divers responded to reports by a group of fishermen who heard the sound of an approaching vehicle and immediately thereafter, what sounded like an object being thrown into the water.

Following a post mortem report, VIC members consulted with families who had reported missing persons to collect DNA samples, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

“Following the collaboration by the SAPS Tshwane water wing and Kameeldrift detectives, the VIC on January 6 confirmed that the DNA results matched that of Mr Khan,” he said.

Netshiunda said the circumstances surrounding Khan’s kidnapping and murder were the subject of police investigations.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello confirmed police were investigating a case of murder.

“Members of the public are encouraged to work closely with the SAPS and report all suspicious and criminal persons and activities by calling the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or by giving tip-offs on the MySAPS app that can be downloaded onto any smartphone.”
