Three arrested in intelligence-driven operations

While a fourth person evaded arrest, he dropped an AK-47 assault rifle out of his cars window during a police chase.

Three people were arrested during two separate intelligence-driven operations in the Tshwane and Johannesburg districts on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Sello said a hijacked vehicle, unlicensed firearms, ammunition and a jamming device were also recovered during the operations.

“Police in the Tshwane district operationalised information and pounced on three suspects, aged between 34 and 44 in Rosslyn,” she said.

“The suspects’ vehicle was successfully intercepted by the SAPS and searched.”

It was during the search that an unlicensed firearm with a filed-off serial number, ammunition and a jamming device were said to have been recovered.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspects’ vehicle is positively linked to a hijacking case and the vehicle was impounded,” Sello said.

In another incident, in Dawn Park, Johannesburg, a motorist evaded arrest after police officers noticed the reportedly suspicious-looking vehicle he was travelling in as they conducted their routine crime prevention patrols.

The vehicle reportedly sped off when police approached it and a chase subsequently ensued.

“Gauteng highway patrol together with EMPD and the JMPD K9 were alerted and a car chase continued onto the R103 highway in Dawn Park.

“The suspect dropped a red bag out of his vehicle’s window and it was discovered to contain an AK-47 assault rifle,” Sello said.

Anyone who had information which could assist police with the investigation were urged to contact their nearest police station, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or leave an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.

Also on the same day, three people were arrested in an informal settlement near Laudium, west of Pretoria, as police intensified their efforts to fight the proliferation of illegal and unlicensed firearms.

Four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were also seized.
