Education sector showed resilience during Covid-19 outbreak – mayor

While the majority of the schools had a smooth start this week, some schools in the north of Pretoria were faced with disgruntled parents over unplaced learners and those who were allocated at schools far from their homes.

Although the education sector faced difficulties during the coronavirus outbreak over the past two years, the sector continued to show resilience.

This was the sentiment of Tshwane mayor Randall Williams as hundreds of learners headed back to school this week.

Williams extended well wishes to the class of 2022 .

“Let me also take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to the 2021 matric class whose results will be released later this month.

“I would like to extend my best wishes to all the learners who are going back to school for the 2022 academic year,” Williams said.

He conveyed special wishes to grade 1 learners who embarked on their first day of school this week.

“To all the returning learners, I would like to congratulate you on the progress that you have made in your studies and encourage you to keep up the good work.

“To the teachers, school management and parents, let me express my thanks to you for the commitment you have shown towards advancing education for our children.

“I know that the impact of Covid-19 has been particularly difficult to manage and through all of this you have shown continued resilience.”

While the majority of the schools had a smooth start this week, some schools in the north of Pretoria were faced with disgruntled parents over unplaced learners and those who were allocated at schools far from their homes.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on Thursday said about 596 grade 1 and 8 learners still needed to find space at schools.

“We are aware that our district offices are pressured with parents who seek assistance on late applications, and those who are unhappy with schools they were offered. Our officials are working tirelessly to assist all parents. We also wish to appeal to the public not to threaten officials with violence, it is really unfair to them,” Lesufi said.
