Both Downs and United have agreed on terms for the permanent move of the Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena with immediate effect.
SuperSport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena has joined Mamelodi Sundowns for an undisclosed fee.
Both Downs and United have agreed on terms for the permanent move of the Bafana Bafana midfielder with immediate effect.
Upon joining the Brazilians, Mokoena said his aim was to compete in CAF Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
“I want to take this time to show appreciation. I am very proud of this achievement and I’m also happy with the decision that I made to join Mamelodi Sundowns.
“As the saying goes, ‘The home of Champions’, I was also born a winner and I want to see myself winning the league, competing in the CAF Champions League as well as the FIFA Club World Cup and just winning trophies,” he said.
The 25-year-old joined Matsatsanta’s academy in the 2014/15 season from Virginia (Harmony) Sports Academy and made an immediate impact in helping Matsatsantsa to win the Metropolitan Cup back-to-back and was promoted to the first team within the same season of making his DStv Diski Challenge debut against Bloemfontein Celtic.
He made his professional debut against Highlands Park and has since played just under 200 games for Matsatsantsa scoring over 20 goals.
He played a crucial role in helping Matsatsantsa lift the MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup trophy twice and contributed immensely in SuperSport United’s historic CAF Confederations Cup journey, finishing as runners-up losing narrowly to DRC’s TP Mazembe in 2017.
Mokoena has also scooped many personal accolades, including the 2020/21 goal of the season, three goal of the month and many more club awards.
The Bafana Bafana international has represented South Africa in all youth levels (u.17, u.20, and u.23) and featured for the u.23 side in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in August having played all three games, scoring one goal.
SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews said Mokoena served the club with distinction since joining in his mid-teens.
“He has helped us win four major trophies and has consistently delivered on and off the field of play. He has made us proud by representing South Africa from u.17 to the u. 23 Olympics team and now Bafana Bafana. He was PSL young player of the year and is a fantastic role model for young players to follow in how to manage a professional career in sport,” Matthews said.
“As a young man, he gives generously of his money and his time to the communities from where he grew up. He will remain a special son of our club alongside special names like Kamohelo Mokotjo, Daine Klate, Kermit Erasmus and Ronwen Williams.
“While we are obviously very sad to lose him as a player, we are delighted for him that he has earned himself a big move to a great club and wish him the best of luck at this crossroads in his career.”
