Shots fired as men try to rob cigarette truck in north of Pta

One suspect was injured while the others fled the scene.

A 46-year-old man was arrested last week after he and his accomplices tried to rob a truck transporting cigarettes in Akasia in the north of Pretoria at gunpoint.

The robbers, driving a white bakkie, fired several shots at a bakkie, also white, accompanying the cigarette truck, according to police spokesperson Captain Amanda van Wyk.

“The driver of the bakkie then allegedly drove into the suspects’ vehicle,” said Van Wyk.

One suspect was injured while the others fled the scene in Karen Park.

The injured would-be robber was receiving medical attention under police guard.

“Police recovered a firearm and ammunition at the scene,” she said.

“According to a preliminary report, the truck was transporting British American Tobacco cigarettes,” she said.

“The suspect is facing charges of attempted robbery and attempted murder,”

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, at least six people were arrested by both police and private security officers shortly after two retail stores were robbed in Tshwane at the weekend.
