Police searching for driver after cyclist was killed in Moot

Police urge residents to help them find a silver-grey Toyota Hilux that sped off after a fatal accident.

Wonderboompoort police are looking for the driver of a silver-grey Toyota Hilux in connection with an apparent hit-and-run where a 48-year-old cyclist died on the scene in Wonderboom South.

“We are urging the residents to help us find a silver-grey Toyota Hilux which was involved in a fatal accident with the bicycle and sped off,” Wonderboompoort police spokesperson Constable Mandlakayise Zwane told Rekord on Wednesday.

Zwane said the accident happened along Steve Biko Road, a stone throw away from the traffic lights on the corner of Steve Biko Road and De Beer Street, around 06:00 on January 30, 2022.

“The pieces of a bumper, fender and a headlight were found at the scene,” he said.

He said, at the time of the accident, the Toyota Hilux had a white canopy.

One of the residents, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he saw a lot of blood stains on the pavement, bicycle seat, cracked helmet for cycling and a long scratch mark from the road to the side walk.

“When asking around what happened, one of the neighbours said he saw a body of a person being collected from the scene. We, however, did not know what had actually happened but the blood on the scene made me scared before I even heard that someone had passed away.”

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

They urged anyone who may have knowledge or information pertaining to this gruesome incident to contact the Wonderboompoort police on 012 335 2812.

People with necessary information may alternatively contact investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Lourens Lemmer on 067 224 6341 or call the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111.

“We also encourage anonymous reporting on the MySAPS app,” Zwane said.

He urged motorists to be considerate of other road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists.
