Bakery creates job opportunities for locals

The bakery employs unemployed residents from Refilwe, Phumzile Park, Wagendrift, Kameeldrift and Onverwacht as resellers.

Eight previously unemployed people from various informal settlements are now successfully earning a decent living as resellers of a local bakery.

The group were employed by a bread bakery company in Refilwe called Quality and Nutritional Fresh Bakery to work as resellers in their various communities.

The bakery employed unemployed residents from Refilwe, Phumzile Park, Wagendrift, Kameeldrift and Onverwacht.

It provides bread at affordable prices and uses unemployed people in the community to resell the products to residents within their different communities.

Jamaica Modila (59), from Phumzile Park informal settlement, takes care of her five children and 11 grandchildren with the money she makes as a reseller.

Modila said she can feed her whole family thanks to the money she now makes every day.

“I work from Monday to Sunday in the mornings and evenings,” said Modila.

“My dream is to have my own bakery or business and create jobs opportunities for unemployed people in Phumzile.”

The founder of the bakery, Shaun Unterslak, said the business was started to provide jobs to the unemployed.

“We have created job opportunities for the locals to work within their community selling proudly South African products,” said Unterslak.

“Resellers are earning much-needed money and with additional products being introduced, their earning potential is even greater.”

The bakery is also encouraging other unemployed residents from other communities throughout Tshwane to become involved and fight poverty by creating job opportunities.

Unterslak further said the bakery is helping the resellers by delivering products to their home every day and making sure that they have enough stock.

“The aim is to assist the resellers to become successful independent business operators, but with the required support in terms of delivery and having access to quality products.”

Many of the resellers are receiving grants and this additional income is providing relief to support their families.

Maria De Bruyn (49) from Phumzile Park informal settlement said she was unemployed and the bakery allowed her to become a reseller.

She sells buns for school children in the morning and afternoon.

Unterslak said the main goal is to create over 100 opportunities for unemployed people in Tshwane.

“We are actively encouraging residents in Kanana, Lethabong, Mooiplaas, Skierlik, Moloto and Kwa-Mhlanga to approach us to act as resellers.

“Once the resellers are improving their sales, we are looking at providing them with infrastructure enabling them to become pop-up spazas selling additional popular products such as confectionery (scones, vetkoek, cupcakes, cream buns, etc.), hot dogs and fast-moving supermarket products such as cold drinks and snacks.”
