Five busted by Tshwane flying squad

The Quantum was spotted because the back windscreen was shattered by shots fired by one of the security guards.

Swift response by the police’s flying squad resulted in five suspects being arrested in two separate armed robberies in Tshwane last week.

On Tuesday, three officers responded to three armed suspects who had robbed the Pep Cell store at a shopping centre in Hammanskraal in the north of Pretoria at around 09:30.

The trio was travelling in a white Volkswagen Polo Vivo which was spotted at the Mabopane railway station with the stolen goods still in the vehicle, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Alfred Legodi.

Police also recovered six 9mm firearms with filed-off serial numbers and 36 live rounds of ammunition.

In the second incident on Wednesday, two suspects were arrested in connection with an armed robbery at Modise’s Tavern in Mabopane Block B, also north of Pretoria.

“A white Imperial Sprinter panel van was making deliveries at the tavern when a white Toyota Quantum with two suspects approached the driver,” he said.

Legodi said one of their officers heard gunshots from a distance and made a turn to attend to the scene while also calling for backup.

“The getaway Quantum was spotted and the two suspects were arrested,” he said.

The Quantum was spotted because the back windscreen was shattered by shots fired by one of the security guards.

One of the suspects was also found with a car-signal jamming device.

In a third unrelated incident, a white Kia that was reported stolen at the Pretoria Moot police station was recovered in Beirut, Lebanon, in Mabopane on Thursday.

“After a short chase, the suspect jumped out and of the car which went through a fence,” Legodi said.

The vehicle was valued at an estimated R85 000.
