One arrested for stolen vehicle, R1m car parts

Additional stolen car parts were recovered during a search of the spares shop.

One person was arrested after he was found in possession of a stolen vehicle from a manufacturing plant in Silverton and possession of car parts valued at more than R1-million in the industrial area of Boksburg North last week.

“According to a preliminary report, police received information that a truck containing car parts had been stolen from a vehicle manufacturing plant in Silverton, east of Pretoria,” provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said.

“The information led the multi-disciplinary team to an identified spares shop in Boksburg North.”

Masondo said the arrest was made as a result of a collaboration between the Gauteng Highway Patrol, Johannesburg metro police department, Ekurhuleni metro police department, and security guards from Brinant Security.

“On arrival at the address, several suspects fled the scene and managed to evade arrest, but the owner of the spares shop was interviewed and a search was conducted,” he said.

Following a search of the shop, Masondo said multiple stolen car parts were recovered.

These car parts included gearboxes, stamped axles, dashboards, centre consoles, steering racks, bumpers, door panels, air-con pumps, wheel arches, and clutch cables.

“A representative from the vehicle manufacturing plant in Silverton was contacted who confirmed the stolen car parts as their property,” Masondo said.

The truck, which contained the stolen car parts, was also recovered from the spares shop.

“Police subsequently arrested the owner,” he said.

The owner faced charges of possession of stolen property and vehicle.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
