Maritimo beat Liverpool in Tshwane Regional League

Maritimo defeated Liverpool 4-2 in the Safa Tshwane Regional League match at the Maritimo Stadium in Hatfield.

Managing Director of the Club Sport Maritimo, Miguel Furriel has welcomed his side’s 4-2 victory over Liverpool FC in an action-packed Tshwane regional league encounter on Saturday at the Maritimo Stadium in Hatfield.

“We played a great game and achieved a good 4-2 win,” Furriel told Rekord.

The victory was crucial for Maritimo as they are in a campaign to be in the top four of the log standings by the end of the season.

They came into the match beater after they had suffered a humiliating 2-1 defeat at the hands of Vikings FC at the Maritimo Stadium two weeks ago.

Losing three points in the previous game seems to have not discouraged Maritimo but motivated them to fight like a wounded tiger in the following match to regain their dignity.

“After losing 2-1 against Viking last week, we went back to the drawing board to correct our mistakes and the boys came back this weekend and claim victory.”

He said hard work had yielded positive results as they won with a high number of goals, thanks to talented Congolese striker Rufus Sackie.

Sackie scored all four goals for Maritimo to give his side a well-deserving victory. He opened the scoring on 20 minutes and extended the lead on 33 minutes, bringing the score to 2-0 in favour of Maritimo.

In the second half, Sackie further extended the lead to 60 minutes.

In the fight to at least level the scoring, Liverpool found the back of the net in 65 minutes, thanks to Amogaleng Ntuli. Maritimo, however, did not back down as Sackie scored the fourth goal in 80 minutes. Liverpool player Mojalega Rafapa scored the second goal for his side bringing the tally to 4-2.

Liverpool coach Ambrose Langeni said although his side did not win the match he was happy with the way his boys took control of the game.

“We played well but unfortunately we lost the match because of our mistakes. We were supposed to win the match – it was not difficult,” Langeni said.

He said despite the loss he was proud that his side outsmarted Maritimo in the field in terms of passing the ball and patience.

“As a coach, I accept the defeat.”

He said it was for the first time coaching Liverpool and he had identified mistakes, which would help him and the team prepare for the next match.

According to the recent log standings, Maritimo is in position nine with 17 points and Liverpool is facing relegation at the bottom of the log with four points.

Maritimo will play Ma-Lions FC at Capital Park sports ground on Saturday while Liverpool faces Mike One Stars FC at Pitch sports ground in Mamelodi East. Both games start at 13:00.
