‘Keep Pretoria CBD clean,’ mayor says during clean-up campaign

Mayor Williams says residents should know that a clean environment brings many opportunities. The CBD is a vibrant economic node in the city, home to hundreds of informal traders and small businesses.

The Tshwane metro mayor held a clean-up campaign operation in Marabastad on Monday as part of his initiative to encourage communities and businesses to take charge of their natural environment.

Mayor Randall Williams, along with other city officials and other multiple stakeholders, took part in the Tswelopele Clean-up Campaign in Marabastad for a “combined effort to clean, safeguard and protect our natural environment”.

Williams said the Marabastad area was a much-neglected part of the CBD.

“Unfortunately, it does not help when we have people littering and exacerbating the situation in Marabastad.”

He said residents needed to note that a clean environment brought many opportunities.

“We selected Marabastad to host our first clean-up campaign for the year. The area is a vibrant economic node in the city, it’s home to hundreds of informal traders and small businesses,” Williams said.

He said the Marabastad area was cleaned, working together with a group of about 20 informal traders including members of the Marabastad business community.

“We managed to collect and dispose of nearly 400 refuse bags.”

He said the Tswelopele Clean-up Campaign seeks to drive collaboration with communities, non-governmental organisations and businesses to promote safe, clean, and aesthetic environments for businesses and our residents.

Williams said the campaign was also supported by three members of the Mayoral Committee together with regional and Tshwane officials leading by example by picking up litter, sweeping the streets and removing illegal dumping.

“Going forward the City is committed to working with the Marabastad business community to tackle elements of urban decay in the area.”

Williams thanked everyone who contributed to the Tswelopele Clean-up campaign a success.

“We all have a collective responsibility to keep our city clean.”
