Manganyi was arrested after the Mamelodi East police’s client service centre received a complaint from the Phomolong informal settlement about a shooting inside a shack.
“On March 7, 2020, at about 18:00, police officers were busy with their normal patrol duties at sector 2 when they received the complaint,” said Mashiloane.
The police rushed to the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that Manganyi shot his wife and his son. His wife later died in hospital.
Detective Sergeant Jack Diphofa investigated and collected necessary evidence.
Mashilaone said through a good investigation by Diphofa, the accused was found guilty.
Manganyi was sentenced as follows:
– Count 1: Murder, sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment.
– Count 2: Attempted murder, sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
– Count 3: Possession of an unlicensed firearm, sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.
– Count 4: Unlawful possession of ammunition, sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
Mamelodi East SAPS management believes this sentence will send a strong message to other people who think of committing similar offences.
Mashiloane said the management commended the investigating officer for working tirelessly to ensure that justice was served.
Acting station commander Colonel Tsebe thanked the officers for their hard work.
“I would like to thank our dedicated police officers who work tirelessly to ensure that justice prevails in our community. We condemn gender-based violence in our area,” Tsebe said.
