Two men get life imprisonment for raping Mamelodi woman

Two life sentences for the men who were apprehended by the community members for raping a 43-year-old woman.

Two men from Mamelodi accused of raping a 43-year-old woman have been permanently removed from society after the Pretoria Regional Court found them guilty on Thursday.

Aubrey Mukoneni (28) and Thabang Muswe (29) from Mamelodi East were sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a Mamelodi woman.

The hefty sentenced came after the two accused were each convicted of two counts of rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The suspects were apprehended by the community members and handed over to the police.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) North Gauteng regional spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana said on August 2, 2018, a woman heard gunshots close to a pub where her son was working at around 03:00.

She went to investigate and also check at the pub if her son was injured.

“When she arrived, she found someone else injured. She then asked community members at the scene to assist the injured person home,” said Mahanjana.

Mukoneni and Muswe pounced and assaulted her with a sharp object until she lost consciousness.

The accused dragged her to a nearby veld by the river and raped her, taking turns until she regained consciousness.

Mahanjana said a man, who was collecting waste by the river, saw what was happening and called the community for help.

The community members apprehended the two men and assaulted them before taking them to the hospital. It was there where the victim identified the perpetrators.

He added that Muswe was linked to the incident by his DNA. The two were arrested and have been in custody ever since.

Prosecutor Mpho Monyane told the court that there are no substantial and compelling circumstances that will make the court deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

She further reminded the court about how the incident happened, how the woman was raped while trying to assist an injured man.

Monyane further asked the court to consider the gender-based violence ‘pandemic’ the country is currently facing when giving a sentence.

Mahanjane concluded that the NPA welcomed the sentence and applauded all stakeholders and community members for co-operating to ensure offenders are held accountable and brought to book.
