Crime increases across north of Pta
“The national crimes statistics of the three months of reporting show significant reductions in the number of crimes committed and reported to the SAPS."
Incidents of crime reported at police stations in the north of Pretoria increased between October, 1 and December 31, 2021, the latest crime statistics showed.
These police stations were Akasia, Pretoria North, and Sinoville.
The third quarter crime statistics were released by police minister Bheki Cele during a media briefing last week.
“It is during this time that the SAPS in all provinces put in place their unique Safer Festive Season operational plans. These plans ensured that crime was kept to a minimal by doubling up efforts to safeguard the security of the republic,” he said.
Cele further said their operational plans ensured that the past festive season was not a “free for all”.
“The national crimes statistics of the three months of reporting show significant reductions in the number of crimes committed and reported to the SAPS,” he said.
These crimes included common robbery, sexual assault, attempted sexual offences and contact sexual offences.
“Murder remains worryingly stubborn,” Cele said.
The Akasia police station recorded an increase in multiple crime categories such as robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle.
These crimes recorded increases of 10, 12.8 and 23.7%, respectively.
Other crimes which recorded an increase were carjacking; robbery at residential premises; robbery at non-residential premises; truck hijacking and trio crimes.
These crimes recorded increases of 60; 12.2; 27.8; 12.5 and 17. 5%, respectively.
Crime categories that recorded a decrease in the number of incidents that were recorded were contact crimes; burglary at residential premises; property-related crimes and all theft not mentioned elsewhere.
They recorded decreases of 2.6; 18.3; 5.0 and 1.3%, respectively.
Pretoria North police station recorded increases in the number of theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles and all theft not mentioned elsewhere crime categories.
These increases were 23.7 and 24.4%, respectively.
The Sinoville police station recorded an increase in the number of commercial crime incidents that were reported and a decrease in the number of theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
The increase was 4.3% and the decrease of 20.8%.
“We have committed to improving our state of policing through specialised policing and refocusing our efforts and expertise in taking down organised crime syndicates,” Cele said.
