Another victory gives Maritimo a boost
Maritimo is now in the top eight after defeating one of the strongest teams in the league.
Two consecutive wins have given the Sport Club Maritimo a massive boost ahead of their South African Football Association (Safa) Tshwane Regional League home game against Tshwane United, the club said.
The home game is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 15:30 at Maritimo sports ground, Hatfield.
Maritimo defeated Ama-Lions, one of the strongest football clubs in Safa Tshwane Regional League, 1-0 at the Trouw sports ground on Saturday and Liverpool 4-2 in the previous week’s game at Maritimo sports ground.
Rufus Sackie Jr scored all five goals that Maritimo have accumulated in the latest two consecutive games including four in the previous match.
Commenting about the recent match, Maritimo managing director Miguel Furriel said the match had been tough and winning it had boosted their confidence.
“The boys fought hard and fortunately got the goal early, which helped them secure the victory,” Furriel said.
He said the difficult game forced his side to work hard to defeat a good team.
“Ama-Lions are a good team.”
He said the ambitions of both teams made the game even tougher.
“We were not only competing to win the match, but to also be one of the top four teams in the log standings.”
He said winning the match had boosted their confidence, which was crucial as they would play Tshwane United next.
He said the 0-0 draw against United in the first leg game of the season disappointed them.
“We were, however, weak at the time but now we have improved and are much stronger.”
He said as a result of the consecutive victories, they were adamant that they would win their upcoming match.
Ama-Lions head coach Ossie Mohale agreed that the match was tough.
“Maritimo put pressure on us in the first half and ultimately scored on two minutes,” he said.
Mohale said his side, however, reduced their dominance in the second half through, changing their game plan to playing long balls.
He said they had themselves to blame for conceding an early goal.
“The goal was as a result of miscommunication between my two centre backs, Menelisi Biyela and Kholofelo Mafolo.
Ama-Lions came into the match with the hope of collecting three points after playing a nil-all draw to City Stars in their previous game two weeks ago in Soshanguve.
“Ama-Lions are a strong team and it comes as a surprise that they could be beaten by Maritimo.”
According to the resent log standings, Ama-Lions moved from position five down to six of the log standings and have a total of 23 points while Maritimo has moved from position nine up to eight with a total of 21.
