Be careful where you park your car – Brooklyn CPF warns
The Brooklyn precinct recorded the highest motor vehicle theft cases in the country between October and December 2021.
The Brooklyn CPF has sent out a warning to motorists to be more cautious when parking their cars.
In crime statistics released by the police minister last week, the precinct recorded the highest motor vehicle and motorcycle theft cases in the country with 251 cases being reported between October and December 2021.
The CPF in the Brooklyn area has appealed to the community to be more mindful of where they park their vehicles.
According to CPF chairperson Marlene Kruger, there has been an increase in the theft of motor vehicles in the area with the top five problematic suburbs being Brooklyn, Menlopark, Ashley Gardens, Waterkloof and Hatfield.
“The criminals mainly focus on Toyotas, Volkswagens and Fords, but any vehicle left unattended, may be at risk,” she said.
“These criminals often scout parking areas at shopping centres, and stand-alone smaller businesses, residential areas, schools and churches for the type of vehicle they want to steal.”
Kruger said there were no specific time frames for these crimes but most of the vehicles were stolen during broad daylight, with Fridays and Saturdays being the most common days.
“Additional high visibility patrols are being organised by SAPS, community patrollers and private security companies to curb the rise of thefts,” she said.
She urged members of the community to report any suspicious vehicles to the police on 10111 or to their local CPF group.
When reporting a suspicious vehicle, try to memorise as much information as possible such as the type of vehicle that the suspects were driving, number plates, colour, number of occupants, time, closest address and the direction they fled.
