Fewer murders recorded north of Pta
During a briefing, police minister Bheki Cele said an 8.9% increase in murder cases was recorded nationally.
Fewer murder cases were recorded during the last three months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020 in the north of Pretoria, the latest crime statistics revealed.
The statistics, recorded between October 1 and December 31, 2021, were announced by police minister Bheki Cele during a media briefing last week Friday.
According to the statistics, the Sinoville police station recorded a 100% decrease in the number of murders that were recorded during the three-month period.
In the 2021 period of reporting, no murders were recorded, compared to two during the same period in 2020.
A decrease in the number of murder incidents was also recorded at the Akasia police station.
During this period of reporting, eight incidents were recorded, compared to 15 during the same period in 2020.
This translated to a 46.7% decrease.
However, the number of incidents recorded at the Pretoria North police station remained the same.
The station recorded two cases during the 2021 period of reporting and two cases in the 2020 period of reporting as well.
A sharp increase, however, was recorded in the number of murders that were recorded at the Kameeldrift police station.
The station recorded a 300% increase.
Four murder incidents were recorded during the three months, compared to only one in the previous period of recording.
One of these incidents was one of a 35-year-old motorist who was killed in a shooting incident at the corner of Moloto Road and Zambezi Drive in November.
During the briefing, Cele said an 8.9% increase in murder cases was recorded nationally.
“562 more people were killed in South Africa between October and December compared to the same period in 2020,” he said.
“Some of the increases in murder are attributable to multiple murders where a number of people are killed in one incident.”
Cele further said that of the 6 859 people who were killed, 902 of them were women and 352 were children.
“232 of the murders were as a result of domestic violence,” he said.
A total of 27 on-and-off duty police officers were also killed during this period of reporting.
“The top four causative factors of these deaths are arguments, vigilantism, robberies, and revenge or retaliation,” Cele said.
He further said that a total of 2 599 people were murdered in public spaces such as an open field, street, parking area and abandoned building.
“The second most likely place for murder to occur is at the home of the victim or the perpetrator,” Cele said.
Liquor outlets were reportedly the third most likely place for a murder to occur.
