Mamelodi police crack down on GBV suspects

Mamelodi West police have successfully arrested 13 suspects in connection with domestic violence cases.

The Mamelodi West police have arrested 13 suspects in connection with domestic violence cases.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the success came after the police took a different approach in dealing with domestic violence cases.

He said the quick response of the police at the client service centre has resulted in this success within a week.

“After a domestic violence case has been reported and we have an idea of the whereabouts of the suspect, we immediately go to arrest the suspect,” said Maheso.

The police further said they are working with the NPA, Women’s Brigade, CPF and Tshwane metro in raising awareness on gender-based violence (GBV) on Friday.

“The issue of domestic violence is very serious. We will leave no stone unturned when dealing with domestic violence cases.

He said that no one will be turned away at the station when reporting a case of domestic violence.

“The case will be attended to immediately.”

The Mamelodi West police management police were very happy with the arrests and warned many people are going to be arrested for domestic violence.

Maheso said police handed out pamphlets about GBV informing the public where to report cases of domestic violence as well as giving tips on where to get help.

GBV is mostly committed against women and girls. It includes domestic violence; physical, emotional, verbal, psychological, economic and sexual abuse; and harassment.

Police condemned violence against LGBTI people, including sexual offences and femicide.

Maheso further encouraged the public to break the silence, by reporting cases of domestic violence to the nearest police station,

After reporting it at the police station, proceed to the Mamelodi court and obtain a protection order.

You can report any GBV cases or domestic violence cases by dialling 08600 10 111.
