Driving school protest brings service at Tshwane licensing centres to a halt

Traffic was also heavily backup on the N1 south from Pretoria to Centurion.

Ongoing protests by the National Driving School Association of South Africa (NDSASA) have led to service interruptions at Tshwane licensing centres.

The association is protesting against the NaTIS online booking system.

“The City of Tshwane’s Roads and Transport Department would like to inform its customers that some licensing centres and motor vehicle registration offices across the city are experiencing service delivery interruptions due to the strike by the driving schools,” said Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

He said those with driving and learner license bookings scheduled for Thursday and Friday would be rescheduled.

On Thursday afternoon, NDSASA members at the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) offices in Centurion demanded the online system be suspended.

“The purpose of the protest is to address the unilateral decision taken by the RTMC together with the Department of Road and Transport to implement the NaTIS online booking system,” they said.

Licensing centres affected by the strike are:

– Bronkhortspruit

– Centurion

– Rayton

– Waltloo

Mashigo said the following motor vehicle registration offices were operating as normal:

– Saambou bulk office

– TMPD specialized bulk office

– Akasia office

Traffic was also heavily backup on the N1 south from Pretoria to Centurion.

“Protesters started at the Cullinan licencing centre, before taking the N4 highway to Pretoria where they stopped at the Watermeyer offramp. The protesters have since proceeded onto the N1 and on their way to the licensing department in Centurion,” said Tshwane metro police.
