West police warn residents of rise in car jamming incidents

"Remove any valuable items visible to criminals. Do not leave things like laptops and phones in the car thinking that the area is safe and has cameras, these criminals can still break into your car.”

Pretoria West police warned motorists about an increase in car jamming incidents in the area.

Police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma said they have seen a recent increase in reported cases of theft out of motor vehicles.

In some cases, the perpetrators would open the rear door without the victim noticing.

“You will think that you have locked because you see the car lights flashing, but it didn’t. Sometimes you find the thieves already parked in a parking lot waiting for the next victim.

“It is usually three guys. The one sitting at the back is the one tasked with opening the rear door without you noticing. They leave the door slightly open so that you do not notice. After you are out of sight, they can access the car to take your belongings.”

Vuma warned motorists not to leave valuables visibly inside their cars.

“Remove any valuable items visible to criminals. Do not leave things like laptops and phones in the car thinking that the area is safe and has cameras. These criminals can still break into your car.

“When people lock their vehicles, they need to make sure that their vehicles are properly locked. All valuables must be kept out of sight or either take them with you.”

Tips to avoid being a victim of car jamming:

– Lock your valuables away properly so that it is not easily accessible. The more difficult you make it for them to get into your vehicle, the less chance you will become part of statistics.

– Walk around your vehicle to make sure that your doors are properly locked as they can open up one of your doors without you even noticing.
