Motorist shot and robbed on old Bronkhorstspruit road (R104)
The road has seen an increase in car related crimes with the most recent trend where robbers target motorists who stop on the side of the road to change tyres.
A 31-year-old man was shot and robbed when he stopped along the R104 (Old Bronkhorstspruit road) on Tuesday evening.
The motorist stopped on the side of the road to change a flat tyre between Skierlik and Donkerhoek.
“The driver had a puncture and when he tried to change it, he was attacked and robbed of his cellphones and laptop,” police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane said.
The man was transported to the Mamelodi hospital.
The R104 has been seeing incidents of car-related crimes including a new hijacking trend where robbers targeted motorists who stop by the side of the road to either urinate or check their tyres.
Two weeks ago, a 33-year-old man was attacked by three armed men while he had stopped by the side of the road.
He was tied up in the bushes and his belongings and car were taken.
A week before that three men were injured when two minibus taxis were shot at.
The shooting happened after the vehicles encountered rocks that had been placed on a road under construction near Skierlik informal settlement near the R104.
According to AfriForum’s Gauteng safety co-ordinator Llewellen Hemmens spikings and robberies of motorists were on the increase in the Boschkop area.
“Such crimes had decreased in December, but started picking up again in the weeks of January until now,” he said.
“Motorists must not stop when they encounter any spikes or punctures on the road. Drive until you reach a safe place or petrol station and call for help.”
Mbatsane advised motorists to avoid the R104 road at night and have emergency services numbers at hand.
“Be vigilant if you have to use that road.
“Motorists must avoid stopping in isolated areas, try to drive until it’s safe to stop.”
