Sinoville SAPS sexual offence stats increase
The station recorded an 18.2% increase in sexual offenses, a 16.7% increase in rape incidents, and a 50.0% increase in sexual assaults.
The Sinoville police station has recorded an increase in sexual offences and rapes between October and December 2021 despite a drop in these crimes across the country.
The information was brought to light following the release of the third quarter crime statistics last week.
The station recorded an 18.2% increase in sexual offences, a 16.7% increase in rapes, and a 50.0% increase in sexual assaults.
A total of 13 sexual offences, seven rapes, and six sexual assaults were recorded.
In the previous year, only 11 sexual offences, six rapes, and four sexual assaults were recorded.
However, other police stations in the north of Pretoria recorded a drop in these crimes.
The Kameeldrift police station recorded a 0% change in the number of sexual offences and one rape.
Sexual assaults decreased by 100%.
There were no incidents recorded during this period, compared to one in the previous period of reporting.
Pretoria North police station recorded a 5.6% decrease in sexual offences and a 42.9% decrease in rapes.
This translated to 17 sexual offences and eight rapes during this period of reporting, compared to 18 sexual offences and 14 rapes during the 2020 period of reporting.
Sexual assaults, however, increased by 300%.
A total of eight sexual assaults were recorded during the 2021 period, compared to two in the 2020 period.
Akasia police station recorded a 31.8% decrease in sexual offences and a 20.0% decrease in rape cases.
A total of 30 sexual offences and 28 rapes were recorded during this period of reporting, compared to 44 sexual offences and 35 rapes in the previous period.
The station also recorded a 75% decrease in the number of sexual assaults recorded.
This translated to six fewer sexual assaults.
Police minister Bheki Cele attributed the decrease in some of the sexual offences recorded between October 1 and December 31 last year to an increase in gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaigns.
“The decrease in some of the sexual offences, especially rape cases, can be attributed to all provinces increasing their GBV awareness campaigns,” he said.
This also included contact meetings between the police and various communities.
During the release of the latest crime statistics last week, Cele said sexual offences decreased by 9% during the three months.
“Despite this drop, 11 315 people were raped between October and December 2021,” he said.
Cele explained that this was a decrease of 903 cases, compared to the previous period of reporting in 2020.
“All nine provinces recorded decreases in rape cases,” Cele said.
He further said that at least 5 012 of these rapes took place at the home of the victim or of the rapist.
A total of 674 rapes were domestic violence-related and 632 of the rapes in this category involved female victims while 42 were male.
