Carjacking incidents rise in north of Pta

A total of 2 824 carjacking incidents occurred in the Gauteng province, compared to 2 346 in the previous year.

Carjacking incidents recorded at three police stations in the north of Pretoria recorded an at least 60% increase in the number of incidents that occurred, crime statistics revealed.

These police stations are the Akasia, Sinoville and Loate police stations.

Incidents in the Akasia policing precinct rose by 60% during October and December 2021. These statistics were recorded between October 1 and December 31, 2021.

A total of 48 carjacking incidents were recorded during this period of reporting, compared to 30 during the 2020 period.

Another police station that recorded an increase in carjacking incidents was Sinoville.

Sinoville police station recorded a 100% increase in the number of carjacking incidents that were recorded.

Six incidents were recorded during this period of reporting, compared to only three in the 2020 period.

The most dramatic increase in the number of carjacking incidents was recorded at the Loate police station, in neighbouring Soshanguve.

Loate police station recorded a 193.8% increase in carjacking incidents.

A total of 47 incidents were recorded during the 2021 period, compared to 16 incidents during the 2020 period.

The Akasia and Loate police stations also came in at number 15 and 16, respectively, as the policing precincts where carjacking incidents were most likely to occur in the Gauteng province.

However, the Kameeldrift and Pretoria North police stations recorded significant decreases in the number of incidents that occurred.

Kameeldrift police station recorded a 55.6% decrease in the number of carjacking incidents that were recorded while Pretoria North recorded a 40% decrease.

A total of four incidents occurred in the Kameeldrift policing precinct while three occurred in the Pretoria North policing precinct.

In the 2020 period of reporting, nine incidents were recorded at the Kameeldrift police station and five at the Pretoria North police station.

In the province, carjacking incidents increased by 20.4%.

A total of 2 824 incidents occurred in the province, compared to 2 346 in the previous year.

This translated to 478 more carjacking incidents in the province.

“Aggravated robberies such as carjacking increased by 13.8%,” police minister Bheki Cele said.

He made the remarks as he announced the latest national crime statistics during a media briefing last week.

“There were 661 more carjacking cases in the period of October to December 2021,” Cele said.

The types of vehicles that were targeted were: buses, motorcycles, multi-purpose vehicles, microbuses, minibuses, trucks (not over 3 500 tons), SUVs, bakkies/panel vans and sedans/hatchbacks.
