Hefty sentence for murder accused

Detective Sergeant Jack Diphofa followed the leads, obtained required witness statements and collected necessary evidence that led to arrest of the suspect.

A Mamelodi man has been sentenced to life and 20 years imprisonment by the Pretoria regional court.

Thabang Jeffrey Mkhize (31), who was arrested in 2019, was found guilty of the murder of a 43-year-old man last week.

Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said the Mamelodi East police management welcomed the sentence.

On Friday, November 23, at about 21:00, Mamelodi East police officers were patrolling the streets, when they were stopped by community members at extension 11.

“They were shown the body of a 43-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his face,” said Mashiloane.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was stabbed by Mkhize with a broken beer bottle at Ntlong ya Lekgowa at extension 11 in the far east of Mamelodi.

Mashiloane said Detective Sergeant Jack Diphofa was assigned to investigate the docket.

Diphofa followed the leads, obtained required witness statements and collected necessary evidence that led to the suspect’s arrest.

“Through good investigation by Detective Sergeant Jack Diphofa, the accused was found guilty of murder and sentenced to serve 20 years in prison,” Mashiloane said.

Mamelodi East police management believe this sentence will send a strong message to other people who think of committing similar offences.

Mashiloane added that the management commends Diphofa for working tirelessly to ensure that the suspect pays for his unlawful act.
