High police visibility in Mams over the weekend
More than 57 suspects for various crimes over the weekend as part of an ongoing police operation.
High police visibility in Mamelodi has led to the arrest of more than 57 suspects for various crimes over the weekend.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 50, were arrested during the ongoing multi-disciplinary Okae Molao operation in Mamelodi.
Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said the operation was organised by Mamelodi East crime prevention and other law enforcement agencies.
Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Major General Girly Mbele was part of the operation. She was joined by senior management of the police and other law enforcement agencies.
Mashiloane said the operation was aimed at assisting the local police station in reducing crime.
“High police visibility make a huge impact by derailing criminals and ensuring criminals are brought to book,” he said.
The suspects were arrested for crimes that included possession and dealing in drugs, theft, fraud, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He said these arrests came as a relief to victims traumatised by crime.
The Mamelodi East police station noted with great concern the number of people driving around the area under the influence of alcohol.
Mashiloane warned such drivers that they put the lives of other motorists and commuters at risk.
Among the people arrested, 24 were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, seven illegal liquor outlets closed and seven undocumented foreign nationals.
Mashiloane encouraged the community to work with the police to fight crime in the area.
The arrested suspects will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court from Monday onwards.
Police said they will continue with operation Okae molao in Mamelodi until the area becomes “a crime-free zone”.
Any illegal activities can be reported to Mamelodi East SAPS on 012 815 7000 or 08600 10111.
